The Eastern Pennsylvania soccer community is mourning the death of Matt Kelly, a 2001 U.S. Youth Soccer national champion who captained teams at FC Delco, La Salle College High School and La Salle University.
The Northeast Philadelphia and West Chester native died March 10 in Orange County, Calif. He was working as a client executive in the business insurance division with the Marsh McLennan Agency in Orange County. He is survived by his wife, April Kelly, and daughter, Quinn as well as his parents, Michael and Anne Kelly of West Chester, sister Erin (Scott) of Exton, nieces Emma and Gabrielle and grandmother Ann Kelly.
Kelly was the co-captain of the 2001 FC Delco U-15 Dynamo II team that won the U.S. Youth Soccer national championship in Indianapolis with a 1-0 win over Ohio Thunder in overtime. The Dynamo II team was a national finalist the following year in Germantown, Md.
Kelly was part of a La Salle College High School team that won the Philadelphia Catholic League title in 2000 and went on to make 71 appearances and 43 starts over his college career at La Salle University from 2003-2006.
