13 Eastern Pennsylvania teams advance in USYS Presidents Cup

June 18, 2023 06:09 PM

2E829BFF-EFA2-401A-BDE8-5516641F2C42Thirteen teams from Eastern Pennsylvania have survived the weekend and are moving on in the USYS Eastern Presidents Cup.

Twelve teams advanced to semifinals that will be played on Monday at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken and a 13th team advanced to a Monday final.

Monday’s matches kick off at 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., and will feature a rematch of last month’s state Presidents Cup final between Warrington FC Storm and Steel United PA.

Eleven other games involving Eastern PA teams will be played. West Mont United will play Kearny Thistle United in the 19U Girls final at 8 a.m. on Field #4.

Lancaster Elite Sprinters have Monday off and will conclude play in their five-team group on Tuesday to decide the winner. The Sprinters made it three wins out of three with a 6-2 win on Sunday and are on top of the group with 9 points.

Warrington SC, which beat Steel United PA 1-0 in the state cup final, completed their perfect weekend with a 1-0 win over Roxbury (NJ) on Sunday morning to make it 9 goals for and zero against in three wins in the 14U Girls Division. Their lone goal came on a penalty kick in the second half.

“I’m really proud of our team; we’ve been together since we were young and we’ve come a long way,” said Carina Dignetti after the win. “I’m really proud of us for making it here today.”

The win started off Father’s Day on a high note for head coach Gino Dignetti, whose daughter Carina plays on the team and whose sons Mike and Nicholas were helping out as assistants.

“This entire year they’ve persevered,” Gino said. “We started this team three years ago with six girls; it looked like we were going to fall apart but these last three years we’ve developed this great family with the girls and the other parents.”

Warrington will face a familiar opponent in Steel United PA which they beat 1-0 to advance to the Presidents Cup. Steel United PA, last year’s state Presidents Cup champions, received an invite after a team from another state dropped out. They’ll get another chance with a berth to the National President Cup on the line on Monday at 8 a.m.

While there was plenty to celebrate at both The Proving Grounds and Plymouth Whitemarsh High School on Sunday, the Presidents Cup journey also came to an end for three Eastern Pennsylvania teams. United Philly Soccer, which has been shorthanded, lost their third straight, CASA lost 3-2 to Simsbury SC Comets when they needed a draw and Lehigh Valley United finished unbeaten with a win and two draws but it wasn’t enough to get through a tough bracket where the wild card advanced with six points.
