USMNT outlasts Canada on penalties to reach Gold Cup semifinal

July 10, 2023 01:50 PM

_slm8163Matt Turner made a pair of saves in a penalty shootout to lead the U.S. Men’s National Team into the semifinals of the Concacaf Gold Cup after a 2-2 draw with Canada on Sunday in Cincinnati.

The U.S. and Canada were scoreless in regulation until substitute Brandon Vazquez 88th minute raced in behind the Canadian defense to head home a perfectly played cross from left back DeJuan Jones.

The late lead would not stand thanks to a swift response from Canada. Two minutes into second-half stoppage time, Miles Robinson was whistled for a handball inside the U.S. box. The referee pointed to the spot and former Philadelphia Union defender Steven Vitoria hit his kick down the middle past Turner to force extra time.

Canada substitute Jacob Shaffelburg found the back of the net in the 109th minute against the run of play but it was canceled out six minutes later on an own goal. The 2-2 tie held through the end of extra time and led to Turner’s heroic display in the shootout.

The Arsenal FC keeper stopped Vitoria’s attempt on the first penalty he faced and gave the U.S. a leg up when he saved Liam Fraser in the second round. After a Vazquez miss in the first round, Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio and Jesús Ferreira all converted and Charles-Andreas Brym’s attempt deflected off the crossbar and out to end it.

With the win, the USMNT advances to face Panama in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup Semifinals on Wednesday, July 12 at SnapDragon Stadium in San Diego, Calif. (7:30 p.m. ET; FS1, Univision, TUDN).
