USWNT Qualifies For The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

USWNT Clinch 2023 World Cup qualification after win over jamaica

In their second Group A play at the CONCACAF W Championship, the USWNT dominated Jamaica 5-0. This win helped the USA punch their ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The CONCACAF W Championship also serves as qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2024 Gold Cup. With two victories at the W Championship in Monterrey, Mexico, the United States leads its group and will therefore head to next summer’s World Cup games. The USWNT have qualified for every Women’s World Cup since the inaugural games in 1991.

Sophia Smith was the player of the match scoring twice in the opening minutes. Smith scored her first in the fifth minute and added another in the eighth. Smith now records eight international goals. The next of the five was scored by midfielder Rose Lavelle in the 59th minute. In the 83rd minute, Kristie Mewis added a goal from a penalty. 3 minutes later, Malory Pugh crossed the ball directly into the box to find Trinity Rodman who placed it right in the net. Sophia Smith commented on last night’s game saying, “Obviously, being a young player on this team, it can be a little bit intimidating, but I think I've found my confidence and I've just felt I can be myself on the field.” Megan Rapinoe was not at Thursdays match as she was receiving the Medal of Freedom at the White House.

Next the USA will play their final match against Mexico, which will determine first place in the group standings. The U.S. will advance to the semifinal round of the W Championship where they will go on to play a team from Group B. Group B includes Canada, Costa Rica, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago.

USA will play Mexico on Monday, July 11 at 10:00 PM. Broadcast coverage will be available on Paramount+ and the VIX App.
